One thing I never learned...
Okay, this is going to come off as a totally weird thought, but I realized that there was something I never learned how to do when I was growing up. Of course, there are many other things I never learned how to do, like how to pee standing up or how to juggle. But this thing I never learned is something that started to really bug me when I realized that I may never be able to impart this skill to my own daughter (or son) because I didn't know how. Well, maybe that's being a little overly dramatic since I don't have any kids. It actually hit me when I was trying to braid my own hair last night and it dawned on me that I don't know how to French braid hair. You're probably thinking "Who cares?" Well, at this very moment, I care, and not knowing how to do little things like this bugs me. It's probably a very simple process since I already know how to do a normal braid, which is why it is gnawing at me even more. I've tried to look at internet sites on how to French braid, but when I try to do it to my own hair, it doesn't come out right.
My older cousin used to French braid her own hair and now she French braids her daughter's hair. She never taught me how to, and since I grew up with the mandatory 80's bowl-cut, it wasn't feasible to braid my hair anyway. So I'm now twenty-six years-old with my hair being the longest it's ever been, and I don't know how to French braid it to save my life. Nowadays, kids are learning how to do cornrows and I can't even get to base one. Which reminds me, I don't know how to text message as quickly as kids do, and it's frightening because I'm still wondering why a ten-year-old needs a cellphone in the first place. Back in my day, we used pay phones.
So I came up with a strategy. Since my fiance and I live far from home now, which means my nieces aren't available for this task, I think I'm going to invest in one of those Barbie hairstyling heads to practice on. Besides, I don't think it's right to try to lure one of the neighbor's kids with candy so that I can use her for her head. Well, I hope Erwin doesn't think this is too crazy, although I myself already think it is. But I am determined to learn this skill so I can cross it off my list of "Things I Never Learned How To Do." I'll let you know how it all turns out!
