Weapon of Choice: Hot Glue Gun
I've never been the "arts & crafts" type, but ever since we started planning for this wedding, I realized that I could save money by making some of the stuff myself. It really wasn't that difficult either, just a matter of getting the right tools and having patience. My hot glue gun has been an awesome tool, and aside from the fact that I accidentally burned my finger a few times, it's fun to use!
These flowergirl baskets pictured above were made by me! I actually made four of these for my four flowergirls. I was looking at the stores and on the internet for baskets that looked similar to this, and their costs ranged from $20-$40 each! Plus, I wasn't really satisfied with how the online baskets looked, so I decided to buy small baskets from Michael's (they were about $2.99 each), small burgundy flowers, some white satin-like fabric from Wal-Mart, some white batting, and burgundy ribbon. The total cost of my materials was definitely less than the price of one of the baskets I saw online, plus my baskets were done in my wedding color!
I really had fun making them, plus my technique got better and better with each basket. My artistic husband-to-be was so helpful, giving me good ideas and letting me know when I might be over-embellishing them. He didn't want me to pull a Santino! (All of you Project Runway fans know what I'm talking about!)
The diaper cake pictured above was also made by me for a friend of mine who is pregnant. I went on the internet to find out how to make these myself instead of buying the expensive ones. We went to Target and bought onesies, bibs, burp cloths, bottles, and most importantly, diapers. We got even more stuff that I wasn't even able to fit into the cake, so I put the rest in another box and wrapped it. I loved the little blue puppy, so I wanted him to be on top of the cake, and the bottle that he is holding in his arms is filled with Hershey's kisses! I got the blue ribbon and little bows from Wal-Mart, and the pearl beading was something that I bought for my wedding but ended up not using. I attached those pieces to the ribbon with extreme patience and my trusty hot glue gun! To add some color contrast, I added those little bugs all around the cake that are actually teething toys and fabric bugs that are supposed to hang on the handle of the baby carrier.
This cake was soooo much fun to make, plus it smelled like a freshly bathed baby! I have many other pregnant friends, so I will continue to perfect my technique when I make their cakes!
